Summer Reading for Kindergarten

School is just around the corner and if you have a young one getting ready to take on the adventure of Kindergarten, you may be wondering if your soon-to-be student is ready.

My Atlanta Mommy's good friend Jennifer of Syllables Reading Center told me about a must have book called Straight Talk About Reading by Susan L. Hall and Louisa C. Moats several years ago. I have it thoroughly highlighted, paper clipped, and side-noted. The book is full of ideas of ways parents can make a difference during the early years.

Straight Talk About Reading gives tips for fun games and activities to do with your little ones, from teaching your toddler the alphabet to activities you can do with your third grader. The games and activities are simple and inexpensive to create.
The authors recommend several books to help your soon to be kindergartner with their reading skills.

Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs
by Judith Barrett
Make Way for the Ducklings by Robert McCloskey
Doctor DeSoto by William Steig
Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Suess
Curious George by H.A. Rey
The Cat in the Hat by Dr. Suess
The Legend of the Indian Paintbrush by Tomie dePaula
Babushkas's Doll by Patricia Polacco
Goodnight Gorilla by Peggy Rathmann
Mirette on the High Wire by Emily Arnold McCully

Straight Talk About Reading has been, by far, one of the most helpful books I have ever read. It helped me to be the teacher, the mentor, and the advocate I need to be. I am not an educator, but the book breaks things down, keeps it simple and straightforward, defining terms you will need to know like digraph, phoneme, and phonological awareness.
